Post-Restoration Reformed Anglicans
The ejection of many of the Puritans from the Church of England in 1662 was not the end of the story for Puritanism, for Reformed theology, or for the gospel in the established church. This lecture looks at a common tendentious reading of church history and by examining the lives and teaching of three significant Anglicans in the later Stuart period — Bishop Edward Reynolds, William Gurnall, and Dr Thomas Horton — shows that it results in a skewed perception of the evidence, leading to an under-appreciation of the ministries of such people and a false understanding of the ecclesiastical challenges of those times. Traditions can be passed down and preserved, even in the absence of “big name” celebrity endorsements, dramatic revivals, and access to the great and the good at the centre of power — lessons we would do well to remember in our own turbulent days.
