Theology Thursday: The forgotten member of Trinity?
This article, by esteemed historical theologian, Michael Haykin, provides an introduction to Spurgeon’s teaching on the Holy Spirit. We are taken to sermons, conference addresses and lectures to his Bible College students to see just how important the Holy Spirit was in Spurgeon’s ministry.
Far from being a divisive doctrine, we see just how vital the work of the Holy Spirit is in Christian life and ministry. There can be no power for the preacher or believer without a movement of the Spirit.
Perhaps the weakness many experience in their prayer life is a reflection of our lack of appreciation of the work of the Spirit? If we truly saw how helpless we are without him, and how powerful he is in us, we might well be drawn to pray with a fresh urgency.
The modern blog is not the first place where you could find eight mind-blowing areas in which the Spirit’s aid is vital. Spurgeon got there over 100 years ago!
This article is a brilliant tonic for the tired preacher who needs a reminder of the great and glorious work of the Spirit. So let us pray with Spurgeon: 'O for the Spirit of God to make and keep us alive unto God, faithful to our office, and useful to our generation, and clear of the blood of men’s souls.'
