 An English Prayer Book

Interment of Ashes

1

The minister reads these SCRIPTURE VERSES:

I am convinced, says the apostle Paul, that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8.38-39

2

PSALM 121 is said by all.

I lift up my eyes to the hills -
where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip -
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you -
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm -
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and evermore.

The minister says the words of COMMITTAL. The words in brackets may be omitted:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we praise you for the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life for all who die trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ. We now commit the ashes of N to the ground (earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust); rejoicing that on the last day Christ will transform the bodies of all who trust in him into the likeness of his own glorious resurrection body. Amen.

4

The minister prays for the bereaved:

Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort deal graciously, we pray, with those who mourn, and especially with the family and friends of N gathered here so that, casting all their care on you, they may know the comfort of your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

Other prayers may follow, concluding with the GRACE:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
