1552 Petition against the Pope

One of the changes made between the 1552 and 1559 prayer books was the removal of a clause against the Pope in the litany.

In his Short History of the Prayer Book T.W. Gilbert states:

the prayer for deliverance from the Pope was omitted, in the hope both of conciliating France, Spain, and the Pope himself, and also to win the sympathy of Roman Catholics

From all sedition and privy conspiracy, from the tyranny of the Bishop of Rome and all his detestable enormities, from all false doctrine and heresy, from hardness of heart and contempt of thy word and commandment.
