| There
are just over 100 Bishops in the Church of England (excluding
all the retired ones).
Around half these are
Area, Assistant or Suffragan Bishops.
The full complement
is called the College
of Bishops.
There are 44 Dioceses,
including the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe and the Diocese
of Sodor and Man.
The House
of Bishops is made up of the 44 Diocesan
Bishops, the Bishop of Dover (who acts on behalf of Canterbury
Diocese) and a few Bishops elected from amongst the suffragans.
The House forms one three
houses of General Synod.
Canterbury, York, London, Durham
and
Winchester always have seats in the House of Lords
According to Crockfords "Twenty-one
of the remaining Diocesan Bishops also sit in the Upper House, and they do
so according to their dates of seniority. When a vacancy arises, it is
filled by the senior Diocesan Bishop without a seat, and the vacated See is
placed at the foot of the list of those awaiting seats. Translation of a Bishop
from one See to another does not affect his right to sit in the House of Lords.
The Bishop of Sodor and Man and the Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe are not eligible
to sit in the House of Lords, but the former has a seat in the Upper House of
the Tynwald, Isle of Man."
