- False
Teaching. False teaching is inevitable. It is part
of the work of Satan in trying to hinder the work of the

All Saints Day 2002 (1st November)
sees the 450th anniversary of the 1552 Book of Common Prayer.
This book was only in use for just over a year but became
the substance of later prayer books including the long-lived
1662 book. It represented the pinacle of reformed liturgy
in the Church of England and both issue 86 of Cross†Way and
issue 116/3 of Churchman contain articles exploring the value
and impact of the book
- The Reformed
Worship of 1552 looks at the background to the present
services.
- Cranmer
and the Lord's Supper. The service in 1552 where reformed
principles came most to the fore was the revision of the
service for the administration of the Lord's Supper. This
article looks at the biblical themes which permeate the
service. The text of the 1552 Service can be downloaded
here (PDF - 88kb)
- Of Druids, Bards
and Archbishops Following the announcement of Rowan
Williams as the next Archbishop of Canterbury the media,
and in particular The Times, made hay out of the fact
that he had been invited to be made a Bard at the Welsh
National Eisteddfod in August. Dr Williams is not alone
in having accepted this literary Ohonour¹. Many Welsh
clergy have accepted it in the past including former Archbishops
and evangelicals. It seems that in the past few have protested
against the ceremony but it is undoubtedly the high profile
of Dr Williams that has attracted attention. Is it wrong
for him to have accepted this honour?
- Mary
as Mediatrix and Redemptrix is the third and final
article on the marian errors of the Roman Catholic Church
by David Meager. Since the time of the Reformation the
errors of Rome have increased and today many believe that
Mary and Jesus have a joint role in salvation. Thus they
have ceased to be Christian at all.
- The services of 1552,
which were principally the work of Thomas Cranmer, show
not only sound theology but also shrewd psychology.
'Cranmer -Psychologist
as well as Theologian' by Canon David Wheaton.
- There were many apparently small changes between the
first and second prayer books of the reign of Edward VI
(1549 and 1552) which actually represent major steps in
the reformation of the Church of England. Small
Steps - Big Leaps.

The theme for this issue is Women
Bishops and Priests
.
- Leadership
Within our church we must beware of borrowing
too readily from the world. Christian leaders must serve,
pastor, teach, govern and discipline and in all things
be modelled on Christ. We must also seek so far as is
possible to keep these functions of leadership local.
- When Disaster Comes What is God saying?
Punishing Evil; Justice in War
- Articles
for Today In the concluding part of his series
on the 39 Articles Donald Allister looks at how the articles
would require updating to address issues of today without
diverting from the truths they affirm.
- Revisiting
the Arguments - Women as Priests There is
no shortage of work to be done by the Church of Christ,
no shortage of need or opportunities to minister by both
men and women. However, if we would be faithful to scripture
then we must continue to assert that the roles of presbyteral
leadership in the church are roles which in God's good
purposes are to be exercised by men.
- Women
Bishops I am convinced, and I am aware how
much this infuriates many, that accepting women as priests
and bishops opens the floodgates. We have permitted a
method of interpreting the bible which allows us to draw
different conclusions on matters of ministry to that drawn
by the first Christians and indeed by the church through
the ages. This same biblical hermeneutic (interprative
method) will allow in all maner of destructive teaching
without restraint.

- Has Ecumenism run its course? The

The theme for this issue is A
Church of the People . What Church Society has consistently
argued is that whilst there may be a need for change, what
is being enshrined in the Churchwardens Measure
is a view of the Church of England that is entirely alien
to our heritage and which will ultimately do harm to the Church
and the cause of Christ.

The focus of this issue is Marriage,
Divorce and Remarriage.
Over recent months marriage, divorce and remarriage
have been under discussion in both Church and society. It
is important that a clear biblical voice is heard in these
discussions and therefore the bulk of the articles in this
edition of Cross†Way are focussing on these subjects.
- That
Which God Has Joined Together : The Editor
reviews the current range of discussions relating to marriage
remarriage and divorce.
- Marriage
in the Purposes of God : It is important
to see the context, the big picture - the place of marriage,
and singleness in the eternal purposes of God.
- After over 40 years of marriage and ministry Margaret
and Philip Hacking reflect on the ups and downs of married
life and the particular pressures on those in parish ministry.
Philip was in parish ministry in Sheffield and has had
an international preaching ministry.
- Amongst news about the recent meeting of the General
Synod is an introduction to the new Common Worship Marriage
Service and the text of a speech given by the Bishop of
Liverpool to the July Synod on the
changes to the Nicene Creed .
- The danger of Christians capitulating to the views of
secular society and the challenge to live biblically faithful
lives has never been greater. Today this comes into sharp
focus with the matter of Divorce and Remarriage. In One
or None the Editor sets out this challenge in the
light of scripture. Three books mentioned are currently
available at discout to members of Church Society through
our book club. Also considered is the recent House of
Bishops' report on Marriage .
- Living a chaste and single life in a permissive society
is far from easy. When you have come from a homosexual
background the pressure is even greater and often Churches
prove far from helpful. Under the title The
Silent Witness Martin Hallett, Director of True
Freedom Trust, gives a personal persective on the Church
and Homosexuality.
|
 |
The focus of this issue is Worldliness
.
A neat slogan declares that Christians should be “in
the world, but not of the world”. Through history individuals
and groups have fallen into the traps of seeking to separate
themselves from the world or have become so ‘worldly' that
their witness to Christ has been undermined. This tension
is a theme running through the articles in this issue of Cross†Way.
- Powerful Preaching Peter Brown considers
what he calls the Imp-Licit preaching of today's world.
The underlying assumptions made by the media and many
in positions of influence are completely at odds with
biblical teaching.
- The Children's Society. Christians
were disturbed over the summer to discover the extent
to which the Church of England Children's Society has
now effectively become an entirely secular organization.
- Religious
Life in Russia Today. The Orthodox Churches
have for centuries resisted the influences of the culture
around them. Jonathan Frais, Anglican Chaplain in Kiev,
looks at the religious life of both Orthodox and non-Orthodox
churches in Russia today.
- The Spirit of Inspiration in Music.
Owen Thomas reflects on what makes certain music truly
inspirational in the worship of Almighty God.
- Citizen's
Charter. The Editor looks at practical guidance
from the Book of Proverbs for citizens of heaven living
in an alien land.
- Resolution D: An encouragement to
parishes to opt for extended oversight where their Bishop
has turned from the faith and is not being disciplined.
|
 |
The focus of this issue is Discipline
.
Discipline today is considered almost a dirty word. Ideas
of personal discipline, or discipline in the home, are alien
to many people's way of thinking and, to a large extent, even
to the Church. Although some view discipline as the third
distinguishing mark of a true church it is rare that we find
it practiced in the local congregation and there has been
much consternation nationally about the failure to discipline
errant clerics for both doctrinal and moral matters.
- Clergy Discipline. The
Editor introduces the subject of Clergy Discipline .
A draft Clergy Discipline Measure will be brought before
the General Synod of the Church of England in July. This
has the potential to be helpful, or harmful.
- Is discipline an essential
mark of a Church? The Editor considers the
position of the Church of England in relation to other
reformed churches.
- Disciplining
Children. Gillian Hall, a mother and teacher,
writes on the currently contentious issue of disciplining
children.
- Discipline
in the Parish. Canon David Wheaton, former
Principal of Oak Hill Theological College reflects on
his experience of exercising discipline in parish ministry.
- Self-Discipline.
Revd. Alan Hogarth, Rector of Beckington,
looks at the issue of self-discipline that is so important
to a ‘healthy' Christian life.
- Discipline in a Local Church. The
Editor explores some of the principles for exercising
discipline in a local Church.
- ARCIC Update. An update following
on from the last edition and the eventual release of the
report The Gift of Authority . See also What Can We Expect
